Is Online Poker Legal?

Many poker players want to know if playing online poker is legal for players in the US. This is a question that does not have an easy answer. There are people that say “yes”, there are even more people that say “maybe”and some even say “no”. It really depends on who you talk to and also what type of poker you are talking about.

The main thing that is important to remember is there is no laws explicitly saying that poker is legal or illegal. There are groups trying to fight for making online poker legal and taxing it to create revenue for the federal government. United States Congressmen Barney Frank has introduced and sponsored numerous bills that have outlined ways to legalize online poker with a regulating body and the creation of millions of dollars in tax revenue.

There are also many player groups including the Poker Players Alliance who have raised money and are currently lobbying congress on the importance of creating legal ways for poker players to play online.

The majority of people in the industry believe that poker will eventually become legal for US players in some form because of the revenue that it will bring. It is to hard to prohibit something on the internet and it would be much easier to regulate and tax the industry along the lines of what the UK has come up with.
